4 Days Mount Meru Climbing

Mountain Climbing

Overview

A 4-day itinerary on Mount Meru is an excellent choice for proper acclimatization before taking on Kilimanjaro. As Africa’s third-highest peak and Tanzania’s second-highest at 4,568m, Mount Meru delivers an exciting and rewarding trekking experience across a variety of landscapes.

Located within the scenic Arusha National Park, the journey offers not only stunning natural beauty but also chances to spot wildlife along the way. The trail gradually becomes steeper as you hike over flowing streams, through open parkland, lush montane forest, and into the giant heather and moorland zones.

With an extra day added to the itinerary, trekkers benefit from better altitude adjustment and a more relaxed pace, increasing the chances of a successful summit. The final ascent follows a narrow, rugged ridge leading to the peak, where you are rewarded with breathtaking views of the Ash Cone deep within the crater below.

Tour Plan

Your journey begins at Momella Gate, where you complete park formalities before starting the trek. Accompanied by an armed ranger due to wildlife presence, you hike through open grasslands where giraffes, buffalo, and zebras are often seen. The trail continues through lush montane forest, offering beautiful scenery and a gentle introduction to the climb. After a steady ascent, you arrive at Miriakamba Hut for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, the trail becomes steeper as you move through dense forest into the giant heather zone. The landscape begins to change dramatically, with fewer trees and more open terrain. You will reach Saddle Hut by midday, allowing time to rest and acclimatize. In the afternoon, you can take an optional hike to Little Meru (3,820m) for additional acclimatization and panoramic views. Dinner and overnight at Saddle Hut.

Summit day starts very early, usually around midnight. The climb is steep and challenging, following a narrow ridge along the crater rim. As you ascend, you’ll pass Rhino Point and Cobra Point before reaching the summit at sunrise.

From the top, enjoy spectacular views of the Meru crater, the Ash Cone below, and even Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance on a clear day. After celebrating at the summit, descend back to Saddle Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Miriakamba Hut for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, descend through the forest back to Momella Gate. The trail offers another chance to enjoy wildlife sightings and the beautiful surroundings of Arusha National Park. Upon arrival at the gate, you will receive your certificates before transferring back to your hotel.
