Embark on an unforgettable adventure to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, on this 6-Day Machame Route Climb with Ness Dream Safari. The Machame Route, often known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic trekking routes. It offers spectacular landscapes, diverse vegetation zones, and excellent opportunities for acclimatization through the principle of “climb high, sleep low.”The route approaches Kilimanjaro from the south and passes through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and the high-altitude summit zone before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a morning transfer from Arusha or Moshi to Machame Gate. After completing registration and entry procedures, begin your trek through the beautiful rainforest zone. The trail winds through dense forest with lush vegetation and opportunities to see different bird species and wildlife. Continue gradually uphill until you reach Machame Camp, where you will have dinner and spend the night.
Trekking Distance: Approximately 11 km
Trekking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Machame Camp
After breakfast, begin your trek toward Shira Camp. The trail gradually becomes steeper as you leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone. As you gain altitude, the landscape opens up, offering impressive views of Mount Meru and the surrounding Tanzanian landscape when weather conditions are clear. Continue across the Shira Plateau before arriving at your campsite. Enjoy dinner and rest at Shira Camp.
Trekking Distance: Approximately 9 km
Trekking Time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Shira Camp
Today is an important acclimatization day as you trek toward Lava Tower, reaching approximately 4,600 metres before descending toward Barranco Camp. The trail crosses the spectacular alpine desert landscape and provides impressive views of Kilimanjaro’s volcanic features. After reaching Lava Tower, descend toward Barranco Camp. This gradual ascent followed by descent helps your body adjust to the increasing altitude. Arrive at Barranco Camp in the afternoon and enjoy views of the impressive Barranco Wall.
Trekking Distance: Approximately 10 km
Trekking Time: 6–8 hours
Habitat: Semi-Desert / Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Barranco Camp
After breakfast, begin your climb up the spectacular Barranco Wall. With the assistance of your experienced mountain crew, carefully make your way up the wall before continuing across the alpine landscape. The trail offers spectacular views of the surrounding valleys, glaciers, and mountain slopes. Continue toward Karanga Camp, where you will arrive in the afternoon. Spend the remainder of the day resting and preparing for the next stage of the climb.
Trekking Distance: Approximately 5 km
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Karanga Camp
After breakfast, continue your trek toward Barafu Camp, the final campsite before the summit attempt. The trail passes through increasingly rocky and barren terrain as you enter the high-altitude alpine desert. Upon reaching Barafu Camp, your mountain crew will prepare dinner while you rest and prepare for the summit attempt. You will normally have an early dinner and go to bed early, as the summit ascent begins during the night.
Trekking Distance: Approximately 4 km
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Barafu Camp
Your summit day begins very early, usually around midnight, depending on weather conditions and your guide’s recommendations. Begin the challenging ascent toward Stella Point, located on the crater rim. Continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest point in Africa at approximately 5,895 metres above sea level. Upon reaching Uhuru Peak, take time to celebrate your achievement and enjoy the spectacular surroundings, weather permitting. After the summit, begin your descent toward Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down toward Mweka Camp. Enjoy dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp.
Trekking Distance: Approximately 16 km
Trekking Time: 12–15 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert / Arctic Zone
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Mweka Camp
After completing the 6-day mountain itinerary, the following morning you will continue the descent from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, where you will complete the park exit procedures and receive your summit certificate if you successfully reached the designated summit point. A transfer will then take you back to Moshi or Arusha.
Note: The 6-day Machame itinerary is commonly structured with the summit on Day 6, followed by descent to Mweka Camp. The final descent to Mweka Gate takes place the following morning and is therefore best treated as the post-trek transfer day rather than part of the six mountain trekking days.
The 6-Day Machame Route is a challenging high-altitude trek and requires good preparation and physical fitness. Altitude affects everyone differently, and reaching the summit cannot be guaranteed. Your mountain guide will monitor the group throughout the trek and make decisions based on safety, weather, altitude, and individual wellbeing. The Machame Route offers a demanding but rewarding experience, with significant changes in landscape and altitude throughout the journey. For travelers who prefer additional time for acclimatization, Ness Dream Safari can arrange longer Machame Route itineraries.
