Embark on an unforgettable journey to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, on this 6-Day Rongai Route Climb with Ness Dream Safari. The Rongai Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the northern side near the Kenya border. It is known for its quieter trails, beautiful wilderness scenery, and a gradual approach toward the summit. The route also provides a different perspective of Mount Kilimanjaro compared with routes approaching from the south and west. Throughout the climb, you will pass through several vegetation zones, from cultivated land and rainforest to moorland, alpine desert, and the high-altitude summit zone before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a morning transfer from Arusha or Moshi to the Rongai Gate area. After completing registration and entry procedures, begin your trek through the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail passes through farmland and gradually enters the forest zone. The Rongai side is known for its peaceful surroundings and relatively quiet trekking experience. Continue toward Simba Camp, where you will have dinner and spend your first night on the mountain.
Trekking Distance: Approximately 8 km
Trekking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest / Montane Forest

After breakfast, continue your trek toward Kikelelwa Camp. The landscape gradually changes as you leave the forest behind and enter the moorland zone. The trail provides beautiful views of the surrounding landscape and, when weather conditions are clear, impressive views of the mountain. Continue steadily toward Kikelelwa Camp, where you will arrive in the afternoon. Enjoy dinner and rest while preparing for the next stage of the climb.
Trekking Distance: Approximately 12 km

After breakfast, begin your trek toward Mawenzi Tarn Camp. The trail continues through the moorland and alpine landscape beneath the dramatic peaks of Mawenzi. As you gain altitude, the vegetation becomes increasingly sparse and the landscape more rugged. Arrive at Mawenzi Tarn Camp and enjoy the spectacular mountain surroundings. The afternoon can be spent resting and acclimatizing to the increasing altitude.
Trekking Distance: Approximately 5 km
Trekking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Moorland / Alpine Desert

Accommodation: Mawenzi Tarn Camp
After breakfast, continue your trek across the Saddle, the broad area between the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. The landscape becomes increasingly barren as you enter the alpine desert zone. This is a steady and relatively gradual section of the route, but the increasing altitude makes the trek more demanding. Arrive at Kibo Hut, your final overnight stop before the summit attempt. After dinner, rest and prepare for the early morning summit ascent.
Trekking Distance: Approximately 8 km
Trekking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today is your summit day. You will begin the ascent very early, usually around midnight, depending on weather conditions and your mountain guide’s recommendations. The climb toward Gilman’s Point is steep and demanding. Continue along the crater rim toward Stella Point before making your way toward Uhuru Peak. At approximately 5,895 metres above sea level, Uhuru Peak is the highest point in Africa. Celebrate your achievement at the summit and enjoy the spectacular surroundings, weather permitting. After spending some time at the summit, begin your descent toward Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing toward Horombo Hut. Dinner and overnight at Horombo Camp.
Trekking Distance: Approximately 22 km
Trekking Time: 12–15 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert / Arctic Zone

After breakfast, begin your final descent through the moorland and rainforest zones toward Marangu Gate. Enjoy the changing scenery as you gradually descend from the high mountain environment.
