Experience the adventure of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, on this 5-Day Marangu Route with Ness Dream Safari. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” the Marangu Route is one of the most popular routes on Kilimanjaro. It approaches the mountain from the southeast and is the only Kilimanjaro route where climbers stay in mountain huts rather than tents. The route offers a gradual approach through different vegetation zones, from lush rainforest to alpine desert and finally the high-altitude summit zone. The 5-day itinerary provides a direct ascent and descent, making it suitable for travelers with limited time, although the shorter itinerary allows less time for acclimatization.
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a morning transfer from Arusha or Moshi to Marangu Gate. After completing registration and entry formalities, begin your trek through the beautiful rainforest zone. The trail is surrounded by lush vegetation, with opportunities to see different bird species and, depending on conditions, monkeys. Continue gradually uphill toward Mandara Hut, where you will have dinner and spend the night.
Trekking Distance: Approximately 8 km
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Mandara Hut
After breakfast, continue your trek toward Horombo Hut. The trail gradually leaves the rainforest behind and enters the moorland zone, where the landscape becomes more open and offers impressive views of the surrounding mountain scenery. As you climb higher, you may see distinctive Kilimanjaro vegetation such as giant heathers and other high-altitude plants. Arrive at Horombo Hut in the afternoon and enjoy time to rest and prepare for the next stage of your climb.
Trekking Distance: Approximately 12 km
Trekking Time: 6–8 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Horombo Hut
After breakfast, begin the trek toward Kibo Hut, the final overnight stop before the summit. The vegetation gradually changes as you enter the alpine desert zone. The trail crosses the Saddle, a broad area between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. This section is more exposed and the landscape becomes increasingly rocky and dry as you approach Kibo. Arrive at Kibo Hut and have an early dinner before resting for the summit attempt.
Trekking Distance: Approximately 9 km
Trekking Time: 6–8 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Kibo Hut
Today is your summit day. You will start the ascent very early, typically around midnight, depending on weather conditions and your guide’s recommendations. The climb toward Gilman’s Point is demanding, with steep terrain and high altitude. From Gilman’s Point, continue along the crater rim toward Stella Point and then onward to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at approximately 5,895 metres above sea level. At the summit, take time to celebrate your achievement and enjoy the spectacular views, weather permitting. After reaching Uhuru Peak, begin the descent toward Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut. Dinner and overnight at Horombo Hut.
Trekking Distance: Approximately 22 km
Trekking Time: 12–15 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert / Arctic Zone

After breakfast, begin your final descent through the moorland and rainforest zones. Enjoy the changing scenery as you make your way down the mountain. Continue to Marangu Gate, where you will complete the exit procedures and receive your summit certificate if you successfully reached the designated summit point. Meet your transfer vehicle and travel back to Moshi or Arusha. Your 5-Day Kilimanjaro Marangu Route Climb comes to an end with Ness Dream Safari.
Trekking Distance: Approximately 20 km
Trekking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Moorland / Rainforest

The 5-Day Marangu Route is a demanding high-altitude trek. The shorter itinerary provides less time for acclimatization than longer Kilimanjaro itineraries, so climbers should be prepared for the physical demands of the route. Altitude affects people differently, and reaching the summit cannot be guaranteed. Your mountain guide will monitor the group’s condition throughout the climb and make decisions based on safety, weather, and altitude conditions. Proper preparation, suitable hiking equipment, appropriate clothing, hydration, and following your guide’s instructions are important for a safe and enjoyable climb. For travelers who prefer more time for acclimatization, Ness Dream Safari can also arrange longer Kilimanjaro itineraries.
